ABAYOMI MIGHTY CALLS FOR THE RELEASE OF MAZI NNAMDI KANU, LEADER OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF BIAFRA (IPOB)

Abayomi Mighty has urged the federal government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to promptly release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He contends that Kanu’s release is crucial for addressing the escalating insecurity in South East region.

Abayomi Mighty says Kanu’s ordeals remain fresh in our hearts— a very prominent figure and advocate for the rights of the Igbo people. He mentioned that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was first arrested in October 2015 on charges including terrorism and treasonable felony and was granted bail in 2017, he (Kanu) fled the country but was re-arrested in June 2021 and has since remained in detention.

Abayomi Mighty argues that the Nigerian constitution guarantees right to self-determination, a principle enshrined in Article 20 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which Nigeria has domesticated. He asserts that Kanu’s agitation stems from perceived marginalization of the South East region.

Abayomi Mighty added that since Kanu’s incarceration, there has been a notable increase in insecurity within the region. He says these disturbing occurrences are suggestive of Kanu’s continued detention.

Abayomi Mighty also noted several reforms and investments in the South East which are aimed at boosting the region’s economy. These include infrastructure projects, increased FDI, and initiatives to promote industrialization. He however lamented the persistent insecurity that has hindered these developments from fully benefiting the local population, as fear and instability deter economic activities and investment.

He continued by saying no business thrives under constant threat, and that potential investors will not be willing to commit their resources to an unstable environment, which further affects the standard of living and economic well-being of the people in the region.

Abayomi Mighty calls on President Tinubu to extend an olive branch by releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to his family and people. He believes that such a gesture would pave the way for dialogue, reconciliation, and peace, creating a conducive environment for sustainable development. He added that the benefits of peace in the South East would extend beyond the region, contributing positively to Nigeria’s overall stability and prosperity.

He further admonishes the federal government to recognize the critical role that inclusive dialogue and respect for constitutional rights play in resolving conflicts. He calls on the Tinubu led government to embrace a holistic approach that addresses the issues of marginalization and economic disenfranchisement, which will in turn foster an equitable and peaceful society for all Nigeri
